Six Points Collective

WORK 10

Knoxville, TN

This project is part of what we called our integrations studio. Occurring roughly halfway through the program, this is the studio where we spend time learning about applying codes, structures, zoning, materiality, and so on. While we did learn about these topics throughout the previous coursework, this was the first rigorous application. As the name suggests, it is the integration of all of coursework and knowledge, and learning to apply it, and learning to work with other disciplines. For this task, we were focused on re-designing existing Section 08 housing as a team, though me and my partner were focused on designing the market-rate and commercial space units that would offset the cost of the housing located in the middle of the campus.

Six Points Collective is a project that focuses on bridging the gap between the existing campus and the neighborhood of Guy B. Love Towers, in downtown Knoxville, TN. While densifying the site was undoubtedly important, the overall well-being of the community, promotion of a healthy lifestyle, and enrichment of the individuals was paramount to the project. The Six Points Collective is part of a larger Collaborative Studio Effort.  The larger site was subdivided into 4 parts, and this particular drawing set was created to represent a collaboration with my partner. The site plan and the section perspective show the overall designs and feeling of the project. This site was designed to function as a reaction to both the towers and the existing shotgun houses across the road. These buildings help step up the project, with the green screen created offering shading and privacy. With the parking lot designed to operate under the idea of “Parking as Park”, every part of the project is designed to entice residents and provide a mixture of public and private spaces. There are currently retail spaces on the ground floor, with a resident only courtyard situated on the second floor above it.

As a whole team, we were extremely motivated to create a cohesive campus that promoted the health of its population and made them feel like part of the local community. Our research led us to wanting to provide green spaces and ample opportunities for recreation. The site map above shows were we were working within the whole campus, and the site map below shows a zoomed in site of just our buildings.
